SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely and it is in fact a widely used acronym to help us set and achieve our goals realistically. Each part of the SMART Framework gels together and helps us create our goals with careful planning. By following this plan, you will also achieve clarity as well as easily track your progress.
How many times in your past have you set goals that were difficult if not impossible to achieve because you were too vague about what you really wanted to achieve? Or you set yourself unrealistic time frames which end up exhausting you and you give up? How many times do you feel overwhelmed when you are setting yourself big goals because you do not know how to break them down in a step-by-step framework?
In this article today, we are going to set a framework which will give you results whether you are setting personal goals, professional goals or goals for your business. When you use the SMART goals framework you will be establishing a core foundation which will lead you to success.

#1 SMART Model in Goal Setting – Specific
Your smart goals must be specific and well defined. If you want a smart goal, avoid ambiguity. When your goals are specific and clear, you stand a much bigger chance of accomplishing them. In order to check whether your goals are specific enough you should ask yourself a couple of questions, at the same time thinking about smart criteria:
- • Why is it important for me to achieve this goal?• Does this goal involve the input of other people? If yes how am I going to rope them in?• When would I ideally like to achieve this goal?• How will achieving this goal positively impact my progress?• What do I want to achieve?
You may wish to compare the goal of “I want to an international coach” to “I want to become a life coach so that I can help others have a better life”.
#2 SMART Model in Goal Setting – Measurable
Define exactly what evidence you need to tick off your progress. If you cannot measure your goals you can never track your progress. If you cannot track your progress you will not stay motivated for long. If you want to keep your beacon light in focus, and you need to meet your deadlines then you need to stay motivated by getting excited when you see yourself move closer to your goal.
If you want to know whether your goal is measurable you will need to ask yourself one very relevant question:
“How will I know when I have accomplished my goal?”
If you can answer this question, you can be sure it is a smart goal.
Your goal is to become a Life Coach. So, you need to go about acquiring the skills of becoming one. You have to identify the training that you need to go through and once you have completed it and gained some practice and experience you will achieve your goal. Your training can be completed within 2 years in order to get accreditation. And you need six months of experience with clients to achieve this goal. This is a measurable goal.
#3 SMART Model in Goal Setting – Attainable
Attainability is another smart criteria. Your goal must be realistic and achievable in order to be successful. In plain words, it is a goal where you can move outside your comfort zone, but you cannot lean into your danger zone. Your goal should stretch you, but it should not destroy you.
In order for your goal to be attainable it should tick off these three boxes:
What are my constraints in attaining this goal? Can I overcome them? What I am going to need to do in order to achieve this goal?
If we continue to focus on becoming a Life Coach – you will need to ask yourself questions like, do I have the resources available to be trained? Can I afford it or do I need to invest in raising more capital to get my training? Can I fit this in my time schedule and work and study?
#4 SMART Model in Goal Setting – Relevant
You will only ever be able to achieve your goals if they really matter to you. You must always have your “Why” I want to achieve this goal aligned to your core values. In life we can all do with help and support but fundamentally we are responsible for our own destiny.Achieving our goals with success can only happen if we really and truly believe that they are relevant to our happiness and our ambition.
For your goal is relevant it should meet the following criteria:
Is my goal worth my efforts and is this the right time to set about achieving it? Am I perfectly poised to achieve this goal and I am the right kind of personality for this goal? Is this goal relevant for my lifestyle or my environment?
You want to gain skills to become a Life Coach, but is this the right time to get trained? Do you need to gain some other qualifications – such as social skills and communication skills before you dive into psychology? Are you the right character type to become a life coach? How does your other half feel about it? Will you find work in your environment where you can use your skills?
#5 SMART Model in Goal Setting – Timely
All goals should have a deadline or a target date. Unless you set yourself, a time frame you will not focus and have something tangible to work towards. Many times, we get lost doing “busy work” and our day-to-day life and distractions take priority over our long-term goals.
Goals will only become timely if you chunk them down.

If you are going to set goals that you can achieve you need to ask yourself – how much time do I expect to need to attain this goal? If your answer is one year, the next question is, so what should I be doing six months from now, one month from now, one week from now – and finally what should I be doing today?
If you are set at becoming at Life Coach, you know that your initial training may take you “X” years – and then you need to evaluate whether you will need further sub-trainings, like learning how to speak in front of an audience – so that is targeting a smaller goal – and after that you may need to find candidates with whom you can train your expertise – even smaller goals. And that is how you chunk it down.

One of the biggest traps in life and in business is that we set ourselves unrealistic goals and basically set up ourselves for failure. Goals must have a sense of direction and they must be either personal or else for the overall benefit of the business that you are running.
Goals mapped out from sheer competition and not from the core values will only exhaust us and leave us totally disappointed.
As a final note always beware of setting goals that other people have control over rather than yourself. It is true that life is very competitive but if you are aiming for something that relies entirely on the decision of someone else, your best laid plans can mean very little. So make sure that you are in control of achieving your goals.
