The Art of Facilitation
If you want to become successful in your coaching business you are going to need to develop three important skills.
1. Crafting and presenting offers.
2. Executing a highly effective sales process – sharpening your skills when you get to a point that you are pitching your offer.
And the last one which is what we are going to discuss today is the
3. The ART of FACILITATION.
What do I mean by the art of facilitation? I mean that this industry of coaching is really changing. It is evolving, and if you are a digital coach, you are going to need to improve your skills on camera. Whoever is going to be the best on video, are going to be the one that will rise above the rest.
This means that we are going to have to sharpen, develop and master the skill of being an expert facilitator. To be amazingly engaging on video. And there is a lot that goes into that. So I want to have this specialised training that goes deep into what it I know to be the Five “E’s of Expert Facilitation.
And if you can dial in these five components of your speaking presence and ability – that one skill set alone is going to elevate you to the very top. It will take you and position you as the expert in your field. Because this is going to translate into the other two – it translates into being able to execute an effective sales process and it is going to translate into being able to craft and present offers.
Which is exactly what you need if you are going to turn coaching into a business. If we are going to work on this skill set alone, you will be able to clearly articulate specific component that are part of the process.
And those of you who are coaches here and are going to commit, and commit relentlessly to master the art of expert facilitation – however long it may take you – a few weeks, a few months or even a year, you are so going to reap the rewards of it.
What Are The 5 E's?
One of the most profitable skill sets in the world is public speaking. And what we are doing with digital coaching is that we are transitioning into this virtual space. So those of you who will be able to create an engaged audience on video and on camera are going to be the ones who are going to be most highly sought after the most valuable coaches on the market.
And I Want This To Be YOU!
So how are we going to dial in these five components – these Five “E” in order to position ourselves as the expert facilitators and also as the expert in our field with a trained and focused effort?
1# The first E – ENERGIZE
IT IS ENERGISE. You need to create ENERGY INTO THAT SPACE!
So what do I mean by energy? It means getting yourself into the right state. The right state even before you get on camera. So right before, you need to let it go… You need to shake yourself up a bit, take deep breaths.
For me it also works by counting… from 1 to 10. Depending on what peak I want to be in. If I am delivering something fun, funky, full of enthusiasm I start low and go high – and if I want to deliver something serious and heavy I start high and go low. Of course, I never do this on camera – and do it live…. But it definitely helps me stay in the vibration that I need to be in.
That way, I can anchor myself – is that I stay somewhere in the middle of my vibration and then take it to where I need it to go. This is a skill that I have managed to attain over all the countless years that I have been on camera – 40 years to be exact, is that I manage to put myself in exactly the vibration that I need to be in order to deliver exactly from the soul of whatever it is I need to give.
So you need to understand that you are your own lead magnet – because it is you that is going to magnetise your audience. You magnetise your audience with your energy and therefore you have to be super intentional about your energy and physiology. You have to bring yourself into the right state, be intentional before you start your training. Because you are only as good as your last training. Always try to remember that. So we want every training that we do to be amazing.
So we are not going to procrastinate but we are going to go into our training energised. And from there we move to our core responsibility and that is to…
#2 The Second E - EDUCATE
We do need to be an expert on whatever it is that we are teaching. We need to establish ourselves as the expert on the subject that we are coaching our audience on. And we are going to do it in simple terms and simple words so that our audience can follow, understand and grow into our training.
And therefore we are going to need to have a structure otherwise we are going to risk going on a tangent, going down a rabbit hole and losing our chain of thought. We could end up talking all over the place and not even making sense.
Therefore, it is our responsibility to create a FORMAT that is simple enough for our audience to follow your thoughts and to understand it clearly and without confusion. It is our position to break it down into bite size chunks that people can understand, internalize and eventually do something with it. So it is our responsibility to deliver with expertise.
It is really our responsibility to be clear, to be concise and to position yourself as the expert of the information that you are giving.
And over the weeks, you yourself are going to gain so much more confidence, and what do you think that this is going to do to you? To your expertise? It is going to improve it. It is going to hone your skills in such a great way. It is also going to elevate you as an expert.
The more you share, the more you prepare, the more people are going to understand that you are knowledgeable, that you know your subject, and that you are the go to person who can coach them and give them the transformation that they are looking for. You are going to gain so much more experience, and anyone who is positioned way behind you and looking up to you as the expert is going to hold you in esteem and lean in a lot more to learn from you. This is your duty, your skill and eventually is going to be your bread and butter as a coach.
So we are going to have to educate our audience BUT AT THE SAME TIME WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO BE….
#3 The Third E - ENTERTAINING
I mean let us face it, who wants to sit down and listen to someone who is totally boring, monotone – even if they are experts in their field. Remember that you are practically putting up a show here?
Think back of when you were a kid at school. Some of your tutors and teachers, you totally engaged with. Others you would roll up your eyes even before they entered the classroom because they lacked the passion and the engagement. They were simply delivering off a text book.
When you think of your favourite teachers growing up, why were they the most favourite? Why? Why did they stand out above the rest and you still remember them?
Because they had a passion about what they were teaching. They felt you. They understood that you needed to go from where you were at to where you wanted to be. They had passion and therefore you built rapport. That energy, that passion, that fun, that love, that commitment, that sensitivity… that is how they made it entertaining.
And sometimes, it is not only about high vibration...
Sometimes it is about understanding, about being authentic, about even being vulnerable. If you really want to connect with your audience, you have to show vulnerability and transparency.
You make them understand that you feel them because of your own experience, and that you have been at exactly the place where they are now because you have been through it. People connect with people that they understand and who understand them.
If you are going to become a great coach, you must show your audience that you have been there and that is why you can help them. So sometimes, you need to lower down the vibration and go to this place of difficulty that they may be been and you lean in into them and extend the hand that is going to pull them out.
Being vulnerable is yet another way of keeping your audience engaged and entertained. Entertaining can be fun and playful and keeping your audience on their toes, but it can also be vulnerability, raw, painful. Literally going down to the ground and meeting them on their terms.
Some of the best strategies is to be real and be from your heart. It is a way to show your audience that hey, I know where you are, because I have been there. I may be a few steps ahead today, and that is why I can help you.. but I definitely feel you.
Share the things that are happening to you, share the areas where you are unsure, be real and that is how you will manage to get connection with your people. That is how being authentic is going to help you to build an audience of loyal fans who will follow you because they like you, they connect with you, and they know that you are real.
You will have to think about what suits you best. Would you rather stand or would you rather sit. For coaching, to be honest, I would rather stand because when I stand I can move around, and I can pull out every single fibre of my existence and give it to my audience.
But sometimes when we are having a heart to heart, there is a better time and place, when I need to sit, to be still and to absorb what my client is telling me, so that I fully focus and dial in.
So, decide the mood and the tempo and give your delivery to be the best depending on the tone and the mood and the circumstance. Whatever it is, it is important that you push in energy and absorb your audience into your subject. That is our responsibility as coaches – we need to draw in our clients and deliver to the super best of our abilities and keep them entertained and drop in the education.
When we are in this process we are actually moving in to the next “E” and that means that we have to make our audience feel
#4 The Fourth E - EMPOWERED
We will have failed our audience if they feel, well yes… it is ok for you to talk because you have mastered this skill, but I will never be able to get there. That would be failure. We need to get our audience empowered so that they will be able to follow through on whatever pivot you are taking them in the transformation process.
This is why you absolutely need to simplify the education process, and make it in bite size chunks so that they can digest it properly and find that they can understand it and relate.
You have to get them to a point where they will be listening to you and think,….
Yes.. I can definitely do this! That is part of the way we are going to educate and guide our audience. It is not about giving you all the answers but it is about helping you find your own solutions. That is how people we guide people. That is why we ask questions that make them think.. that push them to the edge of finding answers in their soul and that how we guide them to the solutions that they are searching for. You empower them, you hold their hand and you keep them accountable
We have got to make sure that they feel EMPOWERED.
If you are new in this space you may run this risk of wanting to share all YOUR experience and all YOU know…
but that is not the way on how to make your audience, your tribe, feel empowered because a lot of times it does not even get them into action.
You know what they say…. Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day… but teach a man how to fish and you will feed him for a lifetime.!!
That is what we want to do as coaches… we want to empower our clients to find solutions and carve their own way forward.
And the FINAL TOOL IS THAT WE GET our audience to…
5# The Fifth E - EXECUTE.
This is a very important tool. This is why we ask questions, this is why we push and this is why we hold our clients ACCOUNTABLE. This is why we ask for feedback, and this is why we set dates, and if the dates are not respected we coax and push some more.. when are you going to get this done by? You ask if they need help or clarity on any part of this process.
As a coach it is your responsibility to give them those actionable steps in bite size chunks that they can implement in a step by step and organised manner and if they fail at some point, they will easily go back, return to that spot and understand better how to execute and how to implement.
Because if they don’t execute, they don’t create results. If they don’t create results, all your efforts will be like smoke to the wind. You want them to execute and to implement and to see the results from their efforts.
And we cannot do this work for them… and we are not supposed to!
But we have to make sure that they do it and that they have actionable steps to follow, as well as that they feel the certainty and the confidence to go out there and EXECUTE!
And when they do that THEY GET RESULTS. And that is how they keep coming back. And then they GROW and YOU GROW AS WELL. Your business grows, your impact grows.
You Become an Expert
And every reason why you got into this space in the first place starts to present itself – it starts to show up in your life and it starts to MANIFEST.
And it manifests because of the way YOU show up FIRST.
If you really want to shine, if you really want to stand out amongst the masses… because this space is becoming more and more saturated by the minute….. then you really need to MASTER these five “E”’s:
Master your energy.
Master your education. Become the expert of the experts – this is how you position yourself as the expert in your field.
Be entertaining – be fun, be sensitive, be vulnerable and be real!
Make sure to empower your audience – give them the power to move forward, knowing that you are their safety net that they can find you when you need them but they will actually be empowered to do what? To execute.
Facilitate them to execute. Because without execution they will never, ever see the results.
So as a coach learn these five “E’s – master them and implement them at every point of your coaching business. This is how to become an Expert Business Coach. As the Master of your Coaching business.
If you learn this, you will become the best of the best in this coaching game. 🙂 You will become an expert business coach.
